How do I start gardening?

Posted under Home gardening tips | No Comment

I've never gardened, and I just moved into my own home with a wonderful backyard that has a good place for a garden. I would love to grow a pretty garden of flowers and some vegetables. I just don't know how to start! Could I please have some tips on how to start a garden, and when to start one! (I live in wisconsin, and our last snowfall was yesterday. SO, just to keep that in mind).

Thank you!

Pick your spot. It should get plenty of sun. You need to dig up the ground. A roto-tiller works best. If you don't have access to a roto-tiller, you'll have to use a shovel. The roto-tiller breaks up the dirt clumps. It needs to be pretty fine for the plants to grow well. Figure out what you want to grow. The seed packets will tell you when is the best time to plant that type of plant in your area. The packets will also tell you how close to plant the seeds, how deep, how much water and sunlight is needed. Growing a garden isn't difficult, but it can be time consuming. You have to get rid of the weeds, water it, put stakes for climbing plants to grow on, etc. Good luck!

If growing vegies and herbs use lots of compost. The soil must be good or they won't grow.
Chives, parsley, rosemary, tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries are easy to start with.
    Enjoy!
